Nicolton Road Active Travel Route

Falkirk Council is currently considering options for Nicolton Road, to support the delivery of a safer and more attractive active travel link for walking, wheeling and cycling.

Nicolton Road is located to the north-east of Rumford. It is currently a narrow rural road which runs from Craigs Crescent in Rumford to the A803 at the Lathallan Interchange.

As part of this work, the Council is exploring whether limiting access for cars on Nicolton Road could help create a quieter, safer and more comfortable route, while still considering the needs of local residents, landowners, agricultural access, businesses and other users.

We want to hear from you!

Your feedback will help us understand how Nicolton Road is currently used, including whether people walk, wheel, cycle, drive, or use the road for access to nearby fields and properties. We also want to understand any concerns people may have, including the potential impact of limiting car access, barriers to walking and cycling, and what improvements would make the route more attractive for active travel.

This engagement exercise will help inform the development of options for Nicolton Road and support decisions on whether changes to vehicle access should be taken forward as part of the proposed active travel link.

The findings from engagement and consultation with key stakeholders and the public highlight the importance of Nicolton Road to the local community, and the varying functionality of the route in its current form.

Engagement and consultation has demonstrated strong support for measures that improve conditions for walking, wheeling and cycling on Nicolton Road. However, this exercise also identified legitimate concerns regarding agricultural access, maintenance requirements and vehicle connectivity. Moving forward, any future proposals will seek to balance these competing needs while delivering a safe and attractive Active Travel corridor.

The next steps for this project, including key tasks / deliverables and estimated timescales, are summarised in the table below:

The issues raised by all participants throughout this engagement and consultation exercise will be reflected in any future Active Travel proposals for Nicolton Road moving forward.
