Grangemouth Flood Protection Scheme

The Grangemouth Flood Protection Scheme is the largest flood defence project in Scotland and one of the biggest in the United Kingdom, protecting communities in Grangemouth, Wholeflats, Glensburgh, Langlees, Carron, Carronshore and Camelon (Stirling Road).

The scheme was identified as the highest priority given the potentially huge costs if an extreme flood event were to occur. Whilst other parts of Scotland have been significantly affected by flooding over the last 5 years, Grangemouth has fortunately avoided significant flooding.

Flood defences are proposed in various locations

  • River Avon from Inveravon to the confluence with the Firth of Forth,
  • River Carron from the A9 crossing at Larbert to the confluence with the Firth of Forth,
  • Westquarter Burn from Grandsable cemetery to the M9,
  • Chapel Burn from Carronshore Road to the confluence with the River Carron,
  • Millhall Burn from Millhall Gardens to the confluence with the River Avon
  • Flood relief channel from Rannoch Park to the confluence with the River Avon,
  • Grange Burn between Zetland Park and confluence with the Firth of Forth,
  • The Polmont Burn from Weedingshall to the M9 and the Firth of Forth between the River Carron and River Avon.
  • The total length of flood defences is approximately 28km.

The project team are continuing to develop the outline design and will continue to engage with the public and affected stakeholders prior to the statutory publication of the proposed final scheme expected in 2024.

Engagement Events

16 February 2024 00:00 - 16 March 2024 00:00

The Grangemouth Flood Protection Scheme (GFPS) will be holding a series of engagement events in late February and early March before the scheme moves forward to Scheme Notification. Proceeding to Statutory Notification was approved by Falkirk Council’s Executive Committee on 16 January 2024.

These are the final engagement events before Falkirk Council commences the Scheme Notification process in Spring 2024.

These events are for anyone who is affected by or interested in the flood scheme. You’ll be able to look at the final design and pose questions to our experts first-hand.

There is an option to attend either in-person or online engagement events, and a full schedule, giving times and locations, can be found attached. Engagement Event No. 4 | Grangemouth Flood (grangemouthfloodscheme.com)

There will be the opportunity to ask questions at both the in-person and online sessions. For those that can’t attend the in-person or online events, there will also be a virtual exhibition. This virtual exhibition will show the same information that will be available at the in-person and online engagement events.
