Bereavement Lair Strategy

Falkirk Council is currently developing a lair strategy to ensure the long-term provision of burial space within its cemeteries. The availability of space for both coffin and ashes casket interments reduces by nature, and action is being taken to identify additional capacity.

As part of this work, assessments are being carried out on unused land within existing cemeteries to determine the suitability for future coffin and ashes caskets burials. Alongside this, potential new cemetery sites are also being explored.

The development of any new cemetery site is subject to strict environmental regulations. This can include requirements relating to soil quality, drainage, and proximity to watercourses. Due to these constraints and the limited availability of appropriate land, it may no longer be feasible to develop new cemeteries across all areas of the Council.
