20mph Speed Limits Consultation
The Scottish Government is developing a National Strategy for 20mph speed limits which supports the delivery of the safe system contained in “Scotland’s Road Safety Framework to 2030”. The Framework promotes the continued growth of active and sustainable travel whilst recognising that the perception of urban and rural roads as unsafe is a barrier against these everyday journeys. The Scottish Government seeks to expand 20mph zones and limits in Scotland.
The Strategy aims to introduce a package of measures which support a range of policies from active and sustainable travel to climate change and will assist to reduce road casualties and the perceptions of road danger in our communities.
Ahead of further guidance being issued by Scottish Government, Falkirk Council would like to know your thoughts on the implementation of 20mph speed limits in your area by way of a short survey.
Phases
Analysis phase
Phase 2 of the project, in terms of feedback, has been slightly delayed due to a number of factors. One major factor has been further clarification from the Scottish Government and Transport Scotland on the proposed national strategy for 20mph speed limits. The Transport Minister provided information to local authorities at a 20mph conference in Edinburgh on the 7th December which affects how Falkirk Council were looking to roll out 20mph speed limits in the area. The report due to go to Executive Committee at the end of November 2023 was placed on hold due to the aforementioned conference. Officers are in dialogue internally on amended proposals for the 20mph speed limit committee report which will also detail a timeline. In light of this we have opened a new phase in this project to allow full results to be published in due course.
